Flats and high-rise buildings

For residential buildings above 15 metres, or as local municipal building bylaws specify, extinguishers and firefighting systems are legally required in common areas and on every floor. That is the society's obligation, not the individual flat owner's.

Inside an individual flat the position is different. The National Building Code recommends a portable extinguisher in every unit, but it is generally not enforced as a mandate for private flat interiors. Most people buy one anyway, because the society's extinguisher is in the corridor and the fire is in the kitchen.

Offices and commercial premises

Here it is mandatory. Commercial offices, shops and business establishments must comply with the fire safety requirements that apply to the premises, and an inspection will look at placement as much as presence. The working rules, set out in IS 2190, are that units must be clearly visible, wall-mounted with the top between about 1 and 1.5 metres from the floor, signposted, and placed so that nobody has to travel more than 10 to 15 metres to reach one.

IS 2190 is an Indian Standard code of practice rather than a law in itself. The legal obligation comes from the state fire service act and the municipal bylaws that reference it, so check what applies to your premises.

Before you buy

Content life is three years for dry powder, wet chemical, foam and water, and five years for CO₂ and clean agent. Alfa Fire manufactures and sells extinguishers but does not refill or service them. Every extinguisher ships with a wall mount.

Housing societies, builders and office fit-outs are supplied in bulk, quoted against the requirement, with a response within one working day.

Home and office fire extinguishers — common questions

How many fire extinguishers does a flat need?

Two covers most 2BHK and 3BHK flats: a blanket or wet chemical unit in the kitchen, and a 2kg ABC unit near the main door or the distribution board. The practical rule is that reach beats capacity — an extinguisher behind a locked cupboard is not cover.

Is a fire extinguisher mandatory in an apartment in India?

For the building, yes above 15 metres or as local municipal bylaws specify — in common areas and on every floor. For the inside of an individual flat, the National Building Code recommends one but it is generally not enforced as a mandate.

Is it mandatory in an office?

Yes. Commercial offices, shops and business establishments must comply with the fire safety requirements for the premises. Placement matters too: visible, wall-mounted roughly 1 to 1.5 metres up, signposted, with a maximum travel distance of 10 to 15 metres.

Which extinguisher is best for a home?

A 2kg ABC dry powder unit from ₹ 1,039.00 is the best single choice, because it covers paper, furnishings, flammable liquids and electrically started fires. Add a fire blanket from ₹ 1,529.00 for the kitchen, which is where it is most likely to be needed.

Where should it be mounted?

On the escape route rather than next to the hazard — so beside the kitchen door, not behind the hob. The top of the unit should sit between about 1 and 1.5 metres from the floor so it is reachable without lifting it down from height.
