Industrial cover is sized by what is stored and how far someone has to walk. A godown stacked with cartons needs different cover from a panel room, and both need enough capacity to matter. Industrial units start at ₹ 1,039.00.

Match the agent to what burns

Cartons, timber, textiles, paper. Class A. Water or foam, in 9 litre capacity, because volume is what cools a deep-seated fire in stacked goods. Powder knocks the flame down but does not soak in.

Solvents, paints, oils, fuel. Class B. AFFF foam, which blankets the surface and stops vapour rising. Water on a flammable liquid spreads it.

Mixed storage, general factory floor. ABC dry powder in 6kg or 9kg, which is the workhorse and the reason most sites standardise on it.

Panels, motor control centres, server racks. CO₂, or an automatic device fitted inside the enclosure so it works when the shift has gone home.

How many, and how far apart

The number is set by travel distance, not by floor area. IS 2190, the Indian Standard code of practice for selecting and siting portable extinguishers, works to a maximum travel distance of roughly 15 metres for Class A risk and less where flammable liquids are held. In a long racking aisle that usually means a unit at each end rather than one in the middle.

Mount them on escape routes and at exits, visible, with the top between about 1 and 1.5 metres from the floor, and signposted above the racking line so they can be seen from down the aisle. IS 2190 is a standard, not a law in itself — the obligation comes from the state fire service act and the factory rules that reference it.

Before you buy

Content life is three years for dry powder, foam and water, five years for CO₂. The 9kg ABC unit is rated 4A and 144B and carries a hose; the 9 litre foam and water units carry a hose and a black plastic base. Every extinguisher ships with a wall mount and screws.

Factories, warehouse operators, contractors and dealers are supplied in bulk, quoted against the requirement rather than this list, with a response within one working day.

Factory and warehouse fire safety — common questions

How many fire extinguishers does a factory need?

It is set by travel distance rather than floor area. IS 2190 works to a maximum of roughly 15 metres to reach a unit for Class A risk, and less where flammable liquids are stored. In practice that means a unit at each end of a long racking aisle, plus dedicated cover at panels and the solvent store.

Which fire extinguisher is used in a warehouse?

For stacked cartons, timber and textiles, 9 litre water from ₹ 2,149.00, because volume is what cools a deep-seated fire. For mixed risk, 6kg or 9kg ABC dry powder from ₹ 1,039.00. For a solvent or fuel store, 9 litre AFFF foam from ₹ 2,249.00.

What size ABC extinguisher for industrial use?

6kg or 9kg. The 9kg unit is rated 4A and 144B, discharges for about 18 seconds and throws roughly 3 metres, which is what you want when the fire is on the far side of a pallet. Smaller units are for vehicles and offices.

Can an extinguisher be installed inside a control panel?

Yes. The automatic aerosol device is designed to sit inside a sealed enclosure and operates on heat alone, with no power supply, wiring or detection panel, so it works on a night shift with nobody present.

Is IS 2190 a legal requirement?

IS 2190 is an Indian Standard code of practice for the selection, installation and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers. It is a standard, not a law in itself. The legal obligation comes from the state fire service act, the factory rules and the municipal bylaws that reference it.
