A car fire gives you about ninety seconds of useful time. After that the cabin is gone. What matters is not capacity but reach — an extinguisher in the boot, under the luggage, is not cover. Vehicle units start at ₹ 949.00.

What size actually fits a car

Anything above 2kg is awkward in a passenger car and tends to end up in the boot, which defeats the point. The practical range is the 500ml bottle in the door pocket or glovebox, or a 1kg ABC cylinder clamped within reach of the driver's seat. A 4kg unit belongs in a bus, a truck or a tempo, where there is somewhere sensible to mount it.

Where to keep it

Within reach of the driver while belted in, mounted so it cannot become a projectile in a collision. The usual places are the footwell on the passenger side, under the front seat, or clamped to the seat rail. Not loose in the boot, and not rolling around the rear footwell.

Is it legally required in India

For private passenger cars, no central law mandates it, though it is strongly recommended. For commercial and public transport — trucks, buses, taxis and hazmat vehicles — it is mandatory under motor vehicle and transport rules, and an inspection will check for it. Requirements vary by state and by vehicle category, so confirm against the rules that apply to your permit.

Heat is the thing people forget

A car parked in the sun through an Indian summer gets far hotter inside than the air outside. The 500ml Mini is rated for storage between −10°C and 55°C and should be kept out of direct sunlight — so the glovebox or a door pocket, not the parcel shelf or the dashboard. The steel cylinders are rated −20°C to 60°C.

Before you buy

Every extinguisher ships with a wall mount; for a vehicle you will want the bracket fixed to a rigid point rather than trim. Content life is three years for the foam and powder units. Alfa Fire manufactures and sells but does not refill or service.

Fleet operators, travel companies and dealers are supplied in bulk, quoted against the requirement, with a response within one working day.

Car fire extinguishers — common questions

Is a fire extinguisher mandatory in a car in India?

Not for private passenger cars under central law, though it is strongly advised. It is mandatory for commercial and public transport vehicles — trucks, buses, taxis and hazmat carriers — under motor vehicle and transport rules. Rules vary by state and vehicle category.

Which fire extinguisher is best for a car?

A compact ABC dry powder unit, 1kg or 2kg, rated for fuel and electrical fires, from ₹ 1,039.00. For a small car where there is nowhere good to mount a cylinder, the 500ml Mini from ₹ 949.00 fits a glovebox or door pocket.

Where should I keep a fire extinguisher in my car?

Within reach of the driver while belted in, and mounted so it cannot fly loose in a collision. The passenger footwell, under the front seat or clamped to the seat rail. Not in the boot, which is where most people put it and where it is no use at all.

Will it survive being left in a parked car in summer?

If it is kept out of direct sunlight. The 500ml Mini is rated for storage between −10°C and 55°C; the steel cylinders are rated −20°C to 60°C. A glovebox or door pocket is fine. A dashboard or parcel shelf in direct sun is not.

How long does a car fire extinguisher last?

Content life is three years for dry powder and foam, after which it needs refilling through a local service provider. Check the pressure gauge monthly — the needle should sit in the green band.
